Once you’ve passed the tests you must register within 12 months.

You can do this here and it is £300. When you have your certificate you can start charging for lessons.

You will not be reimbursed for any time left on your trainee licence. However, you can continue to teach for reward while displaying your trainee licence until it expires.

IMPORTANT: If you do not apply for your green badge and finish your trainee licence the trainee rules will remain in place. You are not an ADI until you hold the green ADI badge, and cannot teach on the motorway or under your own business.

Once on a green badge you can either:

– join a driving school (often referred to as a franchise – see franchise pages on the DITC)

– set up your own business 

The DVSA state that you’ll have at least one standards check every 4 years. You will likely receive one in the first 6-18 months after passing. You also need to renew your registration and get a new DBS check every 4 years. (See renewing your registration)

When using this system you will need your user ID which can be found on all letters sent to you by DVSA. It’s not the same as your ADI personal reference number (PRN). Keep it safe as you need it when you renew.
